I’m Less Mobile, but My Computer Is Not

I don’t run and jump as I once did. But my brain still moves pretty darn fast, and my fingers are still pretty nimble.

That’s why my computer is my lifeline to the world. And, just like the yellow pages, my computer lets my fingers do the walking. The Internet is the world’s biggest library, and it excites me. It answers all my questions, and it keeps me connected. It keeps me energized and it keeps me young…And, I don’t even have to leave the house.

When I researched this article, instead of getting into my car, I drove the internet. Here are four simple tips that will keep your computer healthy and help you maximize your digital experience.

Digital Wisdom Flows from Below: No matter how computer savvy you may be, I believe it is important to remember that, for we Seniors, navigating the digital age is a “learned” rather than “intuitive” behavior. Millennials, Generation Z, and even the younger Alpha Generation, were born into the digital age and learned computers just like they learned to walk. On the other hand, we Seniors layer our digital experience on top of the way we have always “done things”. In this case wisdom does not necessarily come with age. Not only can younger generations help me discover new ways of doing old things, but the process helps keep me young. So, lighten up… let the “kids” help.

Computers Like TLC Too: My computer is a lot like my car. I know how to drive it, but I don’t have a clue what’s under the hood. And every once in a while, my computer needs a mechanic. In fact, just like my car, my computer works better and lasts longer if it gets a regular tune-up.

Protect Your Computer to Protect Yourself: The sad fact is that there are hackers, pirates and just bad actors in the Internet Universe who try to steal our data and invade our lives. We can stop them with a good firewall and virus detection program along with following a few common-sense rules to protect against identity theft and fraud.

If You Are Not an Expert, Find One: Even though I am quite comfortable using my computer, I realize that my knowledge has its limitations, and that the digital world moves faster than I do. For starters, my kids, and now even my grandkids, are a delightful source of assistance and we all get a kick out of them helping Dear Old Grandpa. However, for computer maintenance, security, and technical issues I use a local professional, and I recommend you do so as well. A helpful pro can be your driving instructor, GPS, and mechanic all in one.

Have a safe trip!
