To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, I have often thought that college is wasted on the young. In many ways it was wasted on me. Oh, if I only had the intellectual curiosity then that I have now! The good news is that in my post-career life, I have a chance for a “Do-over” and, just the same as in college, I also have the time.
When we moved here from Washington, D.C. we came for Florida’s weather, natural beauty, and easy-going lifestyle (and the traffic is a wee bit better too). Little did we know that we had stumbled onto a bit of an intellectual hotbed. Perhaps it is because many of us “Come Heres” came here with our own rich traditions, which, when shared, make the sum of the parts greater than the whole. I find it remarkable that we have so many talented and accomplished people who are willing to share their experience as well as learn from others.
I have become a bit of an adult learning junkie. The scope and diversity of local Adult Learning Programs astounds me, and I never seem to be able to fit them all in. An unexpected bonus is the people I meet. I don’t know why it surprised me, but the mere fact that a group of people get together to learn about a particular subject means that we have a shared interest right from the get-go. So, my pursuit of knowledge has also become an important part of my social life.
